This continuing education course delves into the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence (AI) and its increasing integration within mental health practice. Participants will explore the critical ethical considerations arising from the use of AI tools in counseling, psychotherapy, and health psychology, including issues of privacy, data security, algorithmic bias, and the evolving therapeutic relationship.
The course will also illuminate the burgeoning economic opportunities presented by AI-driven innovations, such as AI-assisted assessment, personalized treatment planning, virtual support systems, and practice management solutions. Through a blend of theoretical exploration, practical examples, and critical analysis of current research, this course equips mental health professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to ethically and effectively engage with AI in their practice, fostering positive impact for both practitioners and clients.
Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1.) Analyze at least three key ethical challenges posed by the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in mental health practice, with reference to relevant APA ethical principles and current scholarly literature.
2.) Evaluate a minimum of two distinct economic opportunities presented by AI-driven innovations in counseling, psychotherapy, or health psychology, considering both potential benefits and limitations for practice sustainability.
3.) Describe at least three applications of AI tools currently being explored or implemented in mental health settings, differentiating between their functionalities and potential impact on client care and therapeutic processes.
4.) Discuss strategies for mitigating potential risks associated with the use of AI in mental health, including addressing issues of data privacy, algorithmic bias, and maintaining the integrity of the therapeutic relationship.
Program Format: Live/Synchronous (Online Format on Zoom)
Date & Time: Friday, June 20, 2025- 10am-12:30pm (1 Hour Break) 1:30pm-4pm (Eastern Time- US & Canada). Live Workshop (Lifetime Access to Recording with Enrollment)
Instructional Level: This course is intended for psychologists, counselors/psychotherapists, and other helping professionals. The instructional level of the course is Intermediate, though students electing to learn at an introductory and/or advanced level will benefit and are welcomed to participate in the course.
Number of continuing education (CE) clock hours: 5 CE credit hours*
