The place of story and narrative is central to the human experience.
From how we acquire knowledge, to how we seek entertainment, to how we discover a sense of purpose, and even in how we go about challenging ourselves towards positive change.
And in several counseling/psychotherapeutic traditions, concepts and practices around story and narrative are central as well.
This is notably the case for Narrative Family Therapy, which was jointly developed by psychotherapists Michael White and David Epston in the 1980s. Narrative Family Therapy holds that our identities are shaped by the accounts found in the “narratives” of our lives, both the stories we tell and ones that other people tell about us.
Yet there are other psychotherapeutic traditions that have their own key approaches to narrative, including the metaphor and storytelling interventions employed in Ericksonian/Solution-Based therapies and the interest in myth and larger narrative themes as seen in Jungian Psychology, as well as aspects in other therapeutic approaches.
This course has been formed to create an integrated framework for the multiple story-rich psychotherapeutic approaches, so that mental health professionals will have both a theoretical and practical structure to apply the techniques and understandings of story and narrative in ways to better impact those they serve.
The course learning objectives are:
1.) To identify the main philosophy and techniques in Narrative Family Therapy.
2.) To analyze the forms and structures of the story-informed approaches in Ericksonian/Solution-Based and Jungian psychotherapies.
3.) To apply models of integration of how these various traditions can be conceptualized when considering assessments and interventions in behavioral health.
4.) To assess some of the latest scientific findings regarding how narrative and story affect the dynamics of human knowledge, communication, and social development.
